Foundation of Scouting

Lord Robert Baden-Powell founded scouting in England in 1907. Baden-Powell was in the British Army where he become famous for his work in the Siege of Mafeking during the Boar War. Baden-Powell gave young boys responsible jobs in the Siege which helped them win. He wrote a book "Aids to Scouting" for adults which was published while he was at war. When he came home to England his book was being used by youth all over England.

So he rewrote "Aids to Scouting" for younger boys in August 1907, Where he invited boys to a camp at Brownsea Island. Brownsea Island is Located off the southwestern coast of England. The camp and his book "Scouting for Boys" was based on the skills he had observed and developed during his time in the military.

Purpose of Scouting

The Purpose of the Scout Movement is to contribute to the education of young people in achieving their full physical, intellectual, emotional, social and spiritual potentials as individuals, as responsible citizens and as members of their local, national and international communities.

Scouting in Australia

Scouting started in Australia in 1908 when the first scouting handbook was published.

Scouts Australia is made up of eight Branches - one for each state and territory. Globally, we are represented by Scouts Australia, led by a Chief Commissioner of Australia and National Team. We have nine Chief Commissioners in total, with each Branch operating semi-independently of its neighbours. within each Branch there may be a number of Districts and/or Regions.

About the Group

Our Scout Group is part of the Kingston District which is one of the most successful Districts in Victoria. The Kingston District is also a part of the Bays Region which is one of eleven scouting regions in victoria. The reason why the Kingston District is so successful is from how hard the local community has worked to make it that way.

Scout Groups are formed and maintained because
parents believe in the benefits and teachings that Scouting has to offer and want to make it available
to their children.

The Dingley Scout Group was first founded and opened in 1978.
